Cardiff Friendly Strings

Cardiff Friendly Strings started in January 2017, meeting monthly at St Edward's on a Sunday afternoon, 3-5pm. The initial expectation was that about 20 people would attend, but at the first meeting there were almost 50.

These sessions are organised by Philip Heyman (Principal Viola, Welsh National Opera) and Richard Barlow (Violin, Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service) to give learners the opportunity to play in an ensemble. They are also suitable for players who are proficient on one instrument but are taking up another.

There is a wide mixture of players, some teachers playing their nonspecialist instrument, some adult beginners and quite a few players who haven’t played for 20/30 or even 40 years! People enquiring often ask whether they’d be good enough - the answer is always yes! The most rewarding aspect of this group is seeing someone turn up a bit apprehensive and then gradually find their way and, by the end of the session absolutely over the moon at what they have achieved. And everyone accepts everyone else’s abilities... Some people play more of the notes than others but it doesn’t matter; we’re all there to have fun! People support each other in an environment like this, which is lovely to see.

The level is typically between grade 1 and 5 but is very flexible.

The cost is £3 per session (please bring string instrument & music stand). Details from philip.heyman@ntlworld.com
